HOW TO PLAY THE Anoon

Basic plucking

  1. As you can see from the video, plucking is very simple.

  1. FIRST, OR ALL THREE: Notice that when plucking the strings, the plectra can be used to strike all of the strings or just one string (i.e., the first string). The difference between striking all three strings and striking only one string is merely in the sound. There is no "right way." Plucking the string either way is fine.  Your preference depends on the sound you want to produce.

  1. KEEP HANDS NEAR STRINGS: While it might be hard to notice from the videos, it is important to keep your hands close to the strings when plucking. Move your hand away from the string as is necessary, but as much as possible keep your hands close to the face of the Anoon. One way that Anoon students are taught this leason is by telling them to rest thier thumb on the previous set of strings while plucking the string(s) ahead.

  1. KEEP INDEX FINGER FACING FORWARD: When playing, try to keep your hand in a position that allows your index finger to be as near to parallel to the Anoon bridge as possible. Absolutely parallel is not required, but merely that your finger is almost completely parallel. Of course, this position becomes harder or easier to maintain depending on where on the Anoon you are playing.

  1. KEEP HANDS MOVING ALONG ANOON LINES: This is extremely important. If you follow any advice, follow this - when playing the Anoon your index finger (using your plectra) should pluck the strings above the two lines moving vertically along the Anoon. See the picture below - your hand should pluck along those lines that the arrows are pointing to:

  1. (Although the lines do not extend through the full length of the Anoon, you should imagine they do and your hand should pluck in that area only). The reason for this is related to sound quality. It sounds the best around the area where the lines are. The closer to the edges the sharper the sound will get until it is muffled to near nothing. The closer to the middle of the Anoon that you pluck, the "wider" the sound. To produce the best sound, one must pluck along those guide lines. That's why they are there - not merely for decoration.

  1. COMFORT IS KEY: Try to maintain the basic composure but also adjust yourself so that you are comfortable when playing. With time comes comfort as you slowly adapt to the new movements experienced when playing the Anoon.

I was asked to provide videos on how to play the Anoon.  These videos were recorded early on when I was first learning how to play the instrument.
