HOW TO PLAY THE Anoon

I was asked to provide videos on how to play the Anoon.  These videos were recorded early on when I was first learning how to play the instrument.

Tuning

Tuning is very simple.

- ORAB POSITION -

  1. FLEXIBILITY: From what I've learned, when tuning the Anoon you have to keep in mind that the positioning of the orabs are really up to you. You'll find different Anoon players recommending different "basic" setups. The Anoon teachers I've spoken to explain that you can tune the Anoon with your orabs positioned in the way that meets the needs of the songs you are going to play.

  1. ONE BASIC SETUP: One basic setup that I've been taught is as follows:

    1. If you notice the orabs below, there are two kinds. Near the top of the picture you'll see a "continuous" set of orabs, as opposed to the set of rabs below that have a gap in between two sets of orabs. For every set of orabs you see, you'll see those two kinds... "continous" and "gapped"

    1. "Continuous" (One Option) - You should put all of the orabs up, except for the last three orabs on the right. See the picture below for example.

    2. "Continuous" (Another Option [which I prefer]) - You put UP half of the orabs, and DOWN the other half. I actually prefer this way of setting up the Orabs.

    1. "Gapped" - For orabs that are set up so that you have a number of orabs on the left, and then a gap, and then a few orabs to the right (e.g., 2 or 3 orabs), you should put down all of the orabs on the RIGHT of the gap, and keep up all the orabs to the LEFT of the gap.

    1. You should do what has been explained above for all the orabs on the Anoon

- TUNING YOUR STRINGS -

  1. Now that your orabs are set up, you need to take your Tuning Key and tune your instrument.

  2. The way you do this is by placing the Tuning Key on each peg and turning the peg and plucking the string which you are tuning to see whether it meets the right note you are tuning it to.

  3. You are supposed to tune each set of three strings to the same note,

  4. LIKE A PIANO:

    1. For each set of three strings, beginning from the bottom, you just have to tune your Anoon like a piano.

    2. Starting from the bottom, the first set of three strings closest to you should be set to G2. If you had a piano, it would be the second "G" that you could find from the left of the piano.

    3. The next set of three strings in front of the set of strings that you have just tuned to G should be tuned A.

    4. The next three strings should be tuned to B, next three to C, then D, E, F, and then G again and so on.
